The women’s jumper dress largely came from the large aprons women wore when they did work around the home. Back then, the proper dress for American women was a long skirt and shirt. Because she wasn’t able to do laundry all of the time, she used a large apron that would cover the chest area and her skirt. This is largely where the look of the jumper came from.

Modern Womens Jumper Dress

Gradually, the jumper began to look more like men’s overalls. They were always loose and manufacturers started making denim jumpers. They still resembled the long aprons, but were long dresses that had thin straps that you wore over a blouse. In the 1940’s, they became popular amongst the younger crowd who started to wear them with sashes or belts tied around their waist. This updated the look since it made the jumper more fitted and more stylish. Also, since women had less money due to the war, they chose to wear the jumpers and tried to reuse them multiple times per week. Women of other ages continued to embrace them since they were an easy way of making their closets look more robust. A quick change of the shirt underneath allowed the outfit to look different.

After the 1940’s, they weren’t seen outside the home again until the 1960’s. At that time, the fashion trend took on a more girlish, cute look and designers started to make shorter jumpers that fit over puff-sleeved blouses. This is similar to what is seen today with short jumpers or even jumper shorts. The entire look is different when the dress is shorter since it can be cut at different parts of the body like the waist versus the chest, and it can be cut to fall to different lengths of a woman’s leg. Curiously, in the 1970’s jumpers went back to being practical as fashion took a new direction. It wasn’t until the late 1980’s that jumper dresses returned to the fashion of the 60’s and more designers started making different looks and designs.

Trendy women's jumper dress

Now, the jumper can be characterized into two main types. The first is the trendy jumper dress that is discussed above. It is fun, stylish and can be worn in all different occasions. It can be paired with belts, different shoes, and an array of different jewelry. It is also made to be tighter with lots more frills on the dress.

The second variation is the more traditional jumper that is oftentimes sold on religious sites. These are made to cover up more of your body and will be described as more “modest” type clothing for women to wear. Because the jumper can be worn with long sleeve shirts, it allows every part of a woman’s body to be covered up. The long jumper dress is very traditional and covers a woman’s legs while the top part is a high-cut apron that covers up more parts of the body.

The ladies jumper dress is an excellent choice for women of all ages. Knowing and understanding the history will help you decide which type to buy and when to wear it.
